Troubleshooting

Renewing your IP Address

When you connect to your Road Runner Internet service your computer obtains an IP address from one of our servers. That IP address is "leased" to your computer for a varying length of time that can range from a few hours to several days.

However, sometimes the IP lease becomes corrupted or your computer remains idle (not used) for too long and your lease expires. When that happens your computer may experience problems connecting to the Internet. Usually you can correct these connection issues by releasing your IP address and requesting a new one from the server.

Follow these steps to obtain a new IP address from our server. Select your version of Windows to obtain instructions:

*Note: For Macintosh OS9 users: The easiest way to renew the IP address is to restart your PC.

Windows 95/98/ME

  1. Select Run from the Start menu.
  2. In the Run dialog box, type winipcfg and click the OK button. The IP address will be displayed.
  1. Click the Release All button. The IP Address, Subnet Mask and Default Gateway fields should turn to zeros.
  2. Click the Renew All button. All of the fields should repopulate within a few seconds. Be sure that you wait until the fields have values in them or you receive an error message from Windows. If you close this program before it has completed its task you will have to reboot your computer before you can use your Internet service.

Windows NT Workstation
  1. Select Programs and then Command Prompt from the Start menu.
  2. At the Command Prompt, type ipconfig/all and press the Return key to display your IP address configuration.
  3. Now, type ipconfig /release to release your configuration and then type ipconfig /renew to obtain a new IP address lease.

Windows 2000 and Windows XP
  1. Select Programs and then Accessories from the Start menu.
  2. Select the Command Prompt.
  3. At the Command Prompt, type ipconfig /all and press the Return key to display your IP address configuration.
  4. Now, type ipconfig /release to release your configuration and then type ipconfig /renew to obtain a new IP address lease.
